How long will my job take?

A B Concrete will try and achieve your finished product as quick possible. Depending on the size and complexity of your job it can take anywhere from a couple of days to a couple of weeks. Weather can play a big part in this schedule and can sometime cause delays, your patience will be rewarded!!

 

What happens if it rains on the day of pouring?

Rain can sometimes affect the finishing process of your concrete. Before we do pour, we view many weather forecasts to ensure we make the right call. Although your date to pour may be fine, it is only fair to make up for previous wet days with other jobs. Your job is important and we will keep you informed if your job has to be delayed due to weather or any other unforeseen circumstance.

 

When can I walk and drive on the new concrete?

Concrete cures at different times due to different elements. We recommend 2 days for foot traffic, 7 days for light vehicles (cars etc) and 28 days for heavier vehicles/trucks. We will set up barriers once we have finished placing your concrete. We will also provide a ‘Pre/Post Pour Checklist’ for more information.

Can you match new coloured concrete with existing?

A B Concrete will try our utmost to match your existing concrete. However, different coloring systems may have been used in your old concrete that may not be around now. Weather and general wear and tear will also have an effect on the colour. In time your new concrete should slowly match your existing concrete.

 

Why is there variation in my coloured concrete?

Concrete itself is a natural product. We will do everything we can to ensure consistency in color but it is common to get variations in colour.

 

How does the aggregate become exposed?

Once your concrete has been poured a special surface retarder is sprayed onto it. This increases the time taken for the top 3 – 5mm to set. We will wash off the surface either late the same day or the next morning depending on weather conditions to reveal your aggregate.

 

Can you match new exposed aggregate with the existing exposed aggregate?

We will do out best. As concrete is a natural product and the aggregate is sourced from rivers and quarries it is impossible to guarantee aggregate size and consistency.

 

Why do you seal concrete?

We recommend that your newly laid concrete is sealed to enhance the aesthetics of it and prevent staining. Concrete is a porous material and will become stained by oil dirt if it is left unsealed. Applying a sealer will prevent these stains from soaking in as the will bead on the surface making maintenance easier and keeping your new concrete looking like new for years to come.
Maintaining your concrete through cleaning and sealing should be done on a regular basis just like any other form of property maintenance. With good maintenance you will have beautiful concrete that looks good for years to come. It also helps prevent the build up of moss and mould.

Why do we have to cut our concrete?

All concrete cracks. Expansion cuts are needed to minimize the chance random cracking. The cuts provide a weak point and relieve stress on the rest of the slab. The concrete is ten encouraged to crack in the cut and not in random places. Although expansion cuts are an effective way of reducing the chance of random cracking, unfortunately we cannot guarantee that concrete will not crack.

 

How far apart are the cuts

Approx 3 – 4 meter centers. Cuts are made at the points where the concrete is under the most stress. The areas left are then divided and cut into even squares, approx 3-4 meter centers.

 

When do you cut concrete?

As soon as possible after the concrete has been finished, but not so early that the cuts chip as they are being cut. Usually between 1 - 3 days after the concrete is placed. Time frame will vary for different climates.

 

Can you guarantee our new drive or patios will not crack?

Unfortunately it is impossible to guarantee that concrete will not crack. Concrete is natural product that shrinks as moisture is lost. We will however take all practical measures to minimize the chance of random cracking.

 

What can I do to help prevent cracking?

Keep off the concrete for the recommended period of time and follow our recommendations on your ‘Pre/Post Pour Checklist’.
